Sub Genius Phenomenon, ASK DR HAL! SHOW to appear at the Point Arena Odd Fellows Lodge
The award winning Ask Dr. Hal! Show, a night club phenomenon running for over a decade in San Francisco and beyond, will appear for one night only at the Point Arena Odd Fellows Hall on Saturday, December 10th. Doors are at 8pm, and admission is $10.
Combining comedy, poetry, science, music, dance and the visual arts, the Ask Dr. Hal show is an interactive intellectual salon in which you, the audience, have the opportunity to consult the omniscient and oracular Dr. Hal Robins on life's eternal questions and trivial minutiae—whether prophecy or satire, the result must be experienced to be appreciated.
The show is set to the wild and engaging soundscapes of the SF Weekly's “Best Audio and Visual Collagist”, KROB, who controls the show's complex sound-scape, offers pertinent visual and sound puns, and also presents special edits of sequences from monster movies and animated cartoons. Astronomer Pete Goldie, the Ask Dr. Hal! Show’s very own NASA correspondent, provides the audience with the low down on recent developments in astronomy via his screen-accompanied scientific presentation featuring planets, stars and spacecraft. All of this is orchestrated and moderated from on high by radio personality Mr. John Hell, a role originally founded by S.F. showman (and one-time Mayoral candidate) “Chicken” John Rinaldi.
"Dr. Hal," a.k.a. HARRY S. ROBINS, known for his voice-over, television, radio and live night club performances, is also a cartoonist and fine artist, who has written and illustrated his own published works. His most recent book, Dinosaur Alphabet, was published in 2006 by North Atlantic Books of Berkeley, California. His 2006 art show in New York, "Ornaments of Evolution" took place at Manhattan's Fuse Gallery. He is now exhibiting in the international art show "DRAW," also curated by Fuse, which was most recently seen at the Museo de Ciudad de Mexico in Mexico City. Robins, known for his presence in the Church of the SubGenius, has been a fixture of KPFA Radio's Puzzling Evidence show for twenty-seven years in the Bay Area, and now also has a weekly program on San Francisco's Radio Valencia.FM. His voice work in TV, films and computer games (the Half-Life series, Dota 2 etc.) has brought him to the attention of a new generation of fans. Locals may also recognize him from his annual appearances as the poetic orator at Dragon’s Breath Theater.
Of Rob Cole, aka KROB, the SF Weekly says, “KROB is a man following his vision so tenaciously that San Francisco ought to be famous for housing him. In fact, it may not be accurate to call him a DJ; he runs two, sometimes three radio shows and provides mixed sounds for a variety of events. His talent even extends to video manipulation and other entertainments. Heavily influenced by the oddball pseudo-religion the Church of the SubGenius, Cole reflects, through his incessant antics, the group’s love of free-form creativity; as for the sacred imperative to “slack,” however, he’s not exactly with the program. He’s too busy.”
This version of Ask Dr. Hal! is a roadshow with a little something for everyone, and dancers, spoken-word performers, singers and musicians provide variety and support the comedy. Visiting and local performers include poet Whitman McGowan, singing team Randi and Randy, balladeer Bryn Harris as well as a belly dance and other interpretive fun. A dance party led by DJ Justin Credible will round off the evening.
Difficult as it is to describe, the entertainment value of the show has brought it many fans over the years. Quite a few are expected to travel to Point Arena to experience it once again.
A 501(c)(8) fraternal organization, The Odd Fellows Lodge is located at 183 Main St. (above the Co-op). The doors are at 8pm, the pre-show begins at 8:30, show at 9pm.
